5 Design Tips for Professional Websites

A professional-looking website builds trust, keeps visitors engaged, and ultimately drives conversions. You don’t need a design degree to make your site look polished — just follow these five proven principles.
1. Embrace Whitespace
Whitespace (also called negative space) is the empty area between and around elements on your page. Many beginners try to fill every pixel with content, but this creates visual clutter that overwhelms visitors. Generous whitespace gives your content room to breathe, improves readability, and draws attention to what matters most.
Look at any premium brand’s website — Apple, Stripe, Linear — and you’ll notice one thing they all share: plenty of whitespace. It signals confidence and sophistication. When in doubt, add more space between sections, increase line height in your body text, and give headings generous margins.
2. Master Typography
Typography is arguably the most important design element on a website, since the vast majority of web content is text. Start with a clear hierarchy: a single font family with distinct sizes for headings, subheadings, and body text. Set your body text to at least 16 pixels for comfortable reading.
Limit yourself to two fonts at most — one for headings and one for body text. Ensure strong contrast between your text color and background. A good line height for body copy is between 1.5 and 1.8. These small details make a massive difference in how professional your site feels.
3. Use Color with Intention
A strong color palette typically consists of one primary brand color, one secondary accent color, and a range of neutrals for text and backgrounds. Resist the urge to use too many colors — restraint is what separates amateur designs from professional ones.
Use your primary color strategically for calls to action, important links, and key highlights. Keep large areas (backgrounds, text blocks) neutral. This creates visual hierarchy and guides the user’s eye to the actions you want them to take.
4. Be Consistent
Consistency is the hallmark of professional design. Every button should look the same. Every card should follow the same pattern. Spacing between sections should be predictable. When visitors encounter a consistent design system, they can navigate intuitively without thinking about the interface.
Create a small set of reusable components — buttons, cards, form fields, section layouts — and use them throughout your site. This not only looks better but also makes your site easier to maintain and update over time.
5. Design Mobile-First
Over 55% of global web traffic comes from mobile devices. Designing mobile-first means starting with the smallest screen and progressively enhancing for larger ones. This forces you to prioritize content and simplify layouts, which benefits all screen sizes.
Test your site on real devices, not just browser dev tools. Check that tap targets are large enough (at least 44x44 pixels), text is readable without zooming, and forms are easy to fill out on a phone keyboard. A site that works beautifully on mobile will almost always work well on desktop too.
